This typical representative photo below shows the scratching of the cylinder walls with the new piston having a rough top surface and puddle of oil and gasoline on it. Piston tops are supposed to be very smooth.
The car was returned February 2007 with a loss of 5.5 quarts of coolant out of the 12.8 quarts total. The Viper did not leak any fluids onto the garage floor after the coolant was added back into the system, but the coolant kept disappearing and more had to be added. The missing coolant was probably leaking into the engine block contaminating the oil - some of the head bolts were not very tight.The leaking coolant and overly rich air/fuel mix will break down the engine oil and cause the scratching of the main bearings and cylinder walls or the scratching of the main bearings and cylinder walls could have been cause by detonation of a poorly tuned engine or a combination of both. An additional possible cause is the fact that the torque varied quite a bit on the connecting rod bolts. This happened within only 1,000 miles of the Macedo Motorsports rebuild that took place from November 2005 to February 2007.
These photos below show scrape marks on the new main bearings after only 1,000 miles. This could only occur if there were detonation and/or gasoline contaminating the oil due to an excessively rich air/fuel ratio. We already know from Macedo's Magic dyno that the air/fuel ratio was perfect even though 3 independent dynos all agree that the air/fuel ratio of Larry Macedo's tune was excessively rich.
